A rack is a metal support designed to house electronic, computer and communications equipment.
They are also called racks, cabinets, cabinets or closets.
Each column has holes at regular intervals called U rack units grouped in threes.
This three hole group is defined as a Rack Unit (RU) or sometimes just call a “U”.
1U occupies 1.75″ (44.45 mm) of vertical space.
Manufacturers of rackmount equipment make their product lines based upon how many RUs that the equipment occupies in the server rack.
Racks may present a width range of dimensions. A 12-U rack is normally installed on the wall, whereas a 45-U rack can be employed in floor installation.
The depth of the racks available in the market may span from 500 up to 800 mm.
The mosy common racks employed in structured cabling present a width of 19 in.
